Winter Sowing Native Plants

Winter Sowing Native Plants In-Person

Join us for a winter sowing demonstration on Saturday, January 18 at 11 AM.

Interested in learning how to grow your own native plants from seed?  Master Gardeners Betsy Lennon and Susan Ricercato will guide attendees through the process of winter sowing, sharing all the materials and information you need to get started.

Betsy and Susan will cover the propagation process, including:

  • Seed collection and cleaning
  • Where to purchase native seeds
  • The winter sowing process using milk jugs
  • Transplanting into pots and summer care
  • Fall planting of seedlings

A limited number of native seeds will be made available in the Grow RI Native Seeds (GRINS) Seed Library for checkout. Stop by the Reference desk for more information.

Each attendee will receive an email with additional resources, including websites and gardening guides for plants native to Rhode Island.

Don't miss this opportunity to learn how to grow beautiful, resilient native plants right in your own backyard!

Betsy Lennon and Susan Ricercato are Master Gardeners and members of the Rhode Island Wild Plant Society.  They have been working with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service for several years to create and maintain native plant gardens at Kettle Pond, Trustom Pond, and Sachuest Point.  They have worked with habitat restoration teams to propagate and plant thousands of native plants at wildlife refuges, schools, and public parks throughout Rhode Island.

Grow RI Native Seeds (GRINS) is made possible in part by a grant from the RI Office of Library and Information Services using funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Our mission is to empower Rhode Islanders to grow and champion native plants via seeds and information resources organized by their local libraries.
